Kings College London looking forward to a successful new year

Dear Friends of EUCERS,

at the beginning of the new year we want to thank all of you for your interest and the great cooperation. Please continue to also work with us in 2012!

We are looking back on a successful and active year. In February and December 2011, we welcomed EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger at King“s College and invited him to present our CCS study in Berlin. We hosted expert roundtables on shale gas, energy security in the Black Sea region, and CCS at King’s College London and we just held, on the 18th January 2012, our 10th workshop on „EU Energy Policy: Cooperation with Partners beyond our Borders“. For 2012 we are planning four more conferences, together with the EU Commission Representation in the UK and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in London on European energy topics, in the framework of the EU tender we won in 2011.

Here follows a list of activities

Summer School 2011
Summer School Undergraduate Programme on Global Energy Politics 4-22 July 2011

In 2011, we published two strategy papers on unconventional gas and the future of clean coal. In 2012, at least two more studies will follow: On Japan“s energy security after Fukushima and on Green Energy – Green Business. The latter will be prepared in cooperation with the Centre of European Studies in Brussels and presented in two workshops in London and Brussels in 2012.

To support students and offer an incentive to pursue research in the field of energy security, we are delighted to announce that RWE npower has decided to award an annual scholarship to an outstanding student of proven excellence whose research lies within any of the disciplines represented within the field of energy security. For the first time this year, EUCERS will also run a 10-month fellowship together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

EUCERS is co-organizing, like last year, an Undergraduate Summer School programme in 2012. The three-week course from 2-20 July 2012, headed by Sebastian Herbstreuth, introduces students to the global politics of big energy questions.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mervyn Frost and King’s College London for the great support for EUCERS and Frank Umbach, Petra Dolata, Carola Gegenbauer, Aura Sabadus and Maximilian Kuhn for the good collaboration in 2011.

We are looking forward to an exciting new year and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you here at King“s College London in 2012!

The European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) was established in the Department of War Studies at King“s College London in October 2010. The research of EUCERS is focused on promoting an understanding of how our use of energy and resources affects International Relations, since energy security is not just a matter of economics, supply and technological change.
